concentration camp

From 1933 on, the SS set up concentration camps to imprison people whom the regime regarded as political adversaries. Later, the camps held increasing numbers of people who were persecuted in the context of the Nazi regime's anti-Semitic and racist policies. In the concentration camps, the prisoners died as a result of the inhumane conditions of their confinement, torture, murder, and exhaustion. In the extermination camps, almost all the deportees were killed immediately.
